To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of Blueprint 1, The Source magazine used Jay-Z on the cover.

“After his classic 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, ignited the streets, dazzled the critics, but didn’t move enough units, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter scrapped his bad marketing plan for a one-album discography and decided to drop a new masterful work each and every year. He emerged center stage with a fervent desire to be #1 in the post “Pac-Biggie” era. No MC ever wanted the throne as much as Hov. If consistency kills, he was the Son of Sam, and by the time he got to his sixth album, his frustrated competitors were firing shots back.”

It goes on sale on September 20th.

Watch The Throne Debuts At Number 1 Sells 426,661 Copies First Week

Jay-Z and Kanye West have a lot to celebrate this week after their Watch The Throne album went staight in at Number 1 in 23 countries. According to HitsDailyDouble they sold 426,661 copies in the first week.

This album represents Jigga’s 12th Number 1 album and Kanye’s fifth.

JAY-Z & Kanye West Collaborative Album : ‘WATCH THE THRONE’ Artwork Designed by Riccardo Tisci

The House of Givenchy is pleased to announce that Riccardo Tisci designed all artwork featured in JAY-Z and Kanye West’s newest album to be released worldwide in August 2011.

After designing the cover for the album’s first outing, ‘H.A.M’, in 2010, Riccardo Tisci chose to create this new artwork to celebrate one of the biggest joint efforts in music history.

The artwork’s bold colours and angular lines are symbols of masculinity for two of the most iconic rap figures of our time. Riccardo Tisci naturally incorporates references to his long time signature codes, from meticulously engineered prints to blurred religious images, the strength of these visuals being to bring his Couture techniques and vision to image printing. Therefore, the ‘Watch the Throne’ cover seems to be embroidered while the inside artwork looks painted and printed.

Other symbols are featured, such as architecture and layering, raw materials and animal faces, symmetric shapes combined with bold prints or American obsessions, all part of Riccardo Tisci’s aesthetics, translated to the music world.

I am honoured to have been asked to be part of this incredible music moment with such amazing artists. I am impressed by the amount of respect they have for music and art. We share the same way of working : like a family. Riccardo Tisci

Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Album Watch The Throne Deluxe Edition Available Exclusively at Best Buy, August 12th – August 22nd

The DELUXE CD-version of Kanye West and JAY-Z’s WATCH THE THRONE will be available exclusively at Best Buy locations nationwide from August 12th – August 22nd. The DELUXE album includes four bonus songs from the duo. The most anticipated release of the year from JAY-Z and Kanye West – also known as THE THRONE – has already been deemed a “masterpiece,” garnering critical acclaim from press and tastemakers alike.

The DELUXE packaging for “WATCH THE THRONE” is high-end art created by acclaimed designer Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy. The softpack, when opened up, turns into a cross-like shape printed on gold mylar with Tisci’s patterns embossed throughout. The package also includes an 18-panel poster that features Tisci’s artwork as well as lyrics to the entire album. The CD is a special edition black colored disc which is not standard with normal packaging. In tune with his codes for Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci created an artwork that channels most of his aesthetics: symmetry, lightness, darkness, sharpness and 3D.
